Tallinn is the stronger choice for most first visits because it combines Estonia’s best-known historic centre with the widest transport options. Tartu becomes more persuasive for travellers who prefer museums, university culture and a city that is easier to absorb slowly.

Choose Tallinn for range

Tallinn supports a fuller three or four-day break. The Old Town is only one part of the visit, with Kadriorg, major museums, maritime sites and the seafront extending the programme. It is also the easier base for international arrivals and a trip to Lahemaa.

Choose Tartu for focus

Tartu’s centre is compact and its identity is tied closely to the university, the Emajõgi and the Estonian National Museum. Two nights can feel complete without being rushed. Evening choices and direct international connections are more limited than in Tallinn.

The better two-city answer

The direct train makes the cities easy to combine. Give Tallinn the extra night on a first trip, then use Tartu as the gateway to southeastern Estonia rather than reducing it to a brief stop between trains.
