Prague beyond the Old Town

Prague combines a walkable medieval centre with castle districts, major museums, riverside neighbourhoods and easy rail trips into Central Bohemia.

Start planning

Allow Prague at least two full days, then choose one district beyond the Old Town before adding a day trip.

Divide the historic centre into two walks

Old Town, Josefov and Charles Bridge can fill one measured day. Prague Castle and Malá Strana sit across the river and deserve another, especially when cathedral, palace or garden interiors are part of the plan.

The compact map hides cobbles, slopes and queues. Start early at the busiest monuments, keep one indoor alternative for poor weather and avoid crossing the river repeatedly between reservations.

Choose one Prague outside the postcard view

Letná offers river viewpoints and modern art, Vinohrady has residential streets and neighbourhood restaurants, and Holešovice contains several large cultural venues. One area gives a fuller picture than a rushed loop through all three.

Public transport makes these districts easy to reach. Check the exact stop for larger museums and allow time inside rather than treating every tram ride as a sightseeing route.

Use rail for a focused day trip

Kutná Hora works well as a separate rail day, with Sedlec and the historic centre in different parts of town. Other outings should be chosen for a specific castle, landscape or town rather than added only because Prague has spare trains.

Return times matter after evening concerts or seasonal events. Use the current timetable and station name, since Prague has several mainline stations and not every train uses the same one.

Questions about Prague

How many days should I spend in Prague?

Three days covers the two historic banks and one outer district. Add another day for a major museum or day trip.

Do I need a car?

No. Walking, trams and the metro cover the city, while rail is usually easier for the main day trips.

Where should a first visit focus?

Split time between Old Town and the castle side, then choose one neighbourhood beyond the busiest core.
