Alutaguse National Park travel guide

Alutaguse protects extensive forest, bogs and the clear lakes of Kurtna in Estonia’s sparsely settled northeast.

Choose one official Alutaguse trail or lake area and confirm access before setting out, since the park is dispersed and public transport is limited.

Select one landscape

Alutaguse is not a single visitor site. The park includes large forest areas, wetlands and the distinctive group of lakes around Kurtna, with separate roads and trailheads for different experiences.

A first day should follow one named route and perhaps one nearby lake. Trying to cross the park for several short stops adds driving without giving the quieter landscape enough attention.

Prepare for a remote nature day

Carry water, suitable footwear and an offline route. Mobile coverage, surfaces and facilities can vary, and wetland paths may be affected by water, maintenance, ice or fire restrictions.

Wildlife should be observed at a distance without leaving marked routes or following animals. Sightings are never guaranteed, and responsible travel matters more than obtaining a close photograph.

Link the park with the east

Narva and the Lake Peipus towns provide useful urban anchors, but neither creates a frequent bus circuit through Alutaguse. A car, arranged transfer or guided nature trip is the practical first option.

Keep a park day separate from Narva’s museums or a long Peipus village route. Current trail, weather and road information should decide the plan, particularly in winter and during dry summer periods.

Only with a small route around a suitable service or an arranged transfer. The park does not have one frequent public transport circuit.

The Kurtna lake district or one named official forest and bog trail gives a manageable introduction.

When should I recheck conditions?

Check shortly before the visit and again on the day when weather, fire risk, ice or maintenance could affect access.
